A tropical island forest getaway: Krabi, Thailand |
| |
Have a taste of Krabi!
Possibly the oldest town in Thailand as what some historians say, Krabi is located on a coast a few hundred kilometres southwest of Bangkok, facing the westerly Andaman Sea. Studding the blue seas nearby are Thailand's resort islands like Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and more than a hundred other islets.
Fans of the "The Beach" featuring Leonardo de Caprio, would already have seen Koh Phi Phi's stunning limestone cliffs and cosy beaches. Krabi's lonely shore is a tumult of limestone forms, and from the air you'll see how the islets and the shoreline form a partly submerged emerald mountain range long sculpted and embraced by the sea.
Krabi's climate has two main elements, the rain and the sun, and the best time for experiencing both whilst vacationing here is from November to April, when the sea is glass-smooth calm and the days are sunny with short, cooling rain showers in the evenings.
Cultural traditions hold strong in this part of Thailand, and the locals appreciate discreet behaviour from visitors. For a bit of home-grown comfort, explore the expat stations found on the most popular and upcoming beaches.
On the outlying islands, you might catch a glimpse of the Chao Ley or the Sea Gypsies, who have been long-time settlers in the Krabi region, living on fishing, diving and the collection of marine products.
As a relatively new destination in Thailand's assembly of tourist escapes, Krabi doesn't exactly teem with other holidaymakers yet, so there's definitely more chances for island fun, and days spent only with the palm fronds and the surf. Whether you're into sea sports or not, you'll find plenty of secluded coves and bays to escape to in Krabi. |
